I Want to be That Wise

I met an old man one day.

He was charming in an old-fashioned way.

He seemed an expert on things I didn’t know.

I want to be that wise.

When I saw him again weeks later,

his smile for me couldn’t have been greater.

He knew how to make me feel special.

I want to be that wise.

Accomplished and yet so humble,

I’m amazed at all he can remember

about the world before it moved so fast.

I want to be that wise.

Never rude, nor loud or selfish,

he holds many virtues I cherish;

like dignity, respect and pride.

I want to be that wise.

When he told me about his wife,

I knew she was the love of his life.

His tears were from memories, not sorrow.

I want to be that wise.

He may be slow, but he’s feisty.

His hands tremble ever so slightly.

His thirst for knowledge is still strong.

I want to be that wise.

I’ve treasured this man over time.

I call him a friend of mine.

He taught me to count my blessings

so I might be worthy…and wise!
